Leah Williamson Finally Reveals Why She Chose to Play for England Over Denmark

In a heartfelt and long-awaited revelation, England star Leah Williamson has opened up about her decision to represent the Lionesses on the international stage—despite having strong Danish roots through both of her parents. The 28-year-old defender, who captained England to victory in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 and remains a central figure in English football, finally addressed the lingering curiosity among fans and media alike about her dual heritage and national allegiance.

“Both my parents are Danish, so it’s not something I’ve ever hidden,” Williamson confirmed in a recent interview. “I grew up hearing the language, eating Danish food, and visiting family over there during holidays. Denmark is a big part of who I am.”

Despite the deep cultural connection to Denmark, Williamson said the decision to play for England was made early and naturally. Born and raised in Milton Keynes, England, Leah grew up in a thoroughly English environment when it came to football. She joined Arsenal’s youth academy at the age of nine and quickly rose through the ranks of the English football system.

“I’m proud of my Danish heritage, but England is my home,” she said. “It’s where I learned the game, where I dreamed of playing for my country, and where I built my career. The England badge always felt like the right one for me.”

She also admitted that while there was some light interest from Denmark’s national setup during her teenage years, the England pathway was far more structured and visible. Having represented England at every youth level—from under-15s to under-23s—Williamson felt deeply connected to the national team’s development culture.

“There was never a formal approach [from Denmark], but people around me would say, ‘You know, you could play for Denmark too.’ And of course, I thought about it, but England was always where my heart was. I don’t take it for granted—pulling on that shirt is emotional every single time.”

Williamson also acknowledged that her parents supported her decision wholeheartedly, despite their Danish background. “They’ve always been incredibly supportive, never pushing me in any direction other than to do what made me happy. They cheer just as loudly when I play for England as they would if it were Denmark.”

The revelation comes as Williamson returns to the England squad after recovering from an ACL injury that saw her miss the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Now fully fit, she says she’s more motivated than ever to lead the next generation of Lionesses, while continuing to honour both sides of her heritage.

“I’m proud to be English. I’m proud to be Danish. But when I step onto the pitch in an England shirt, I give everything for that crest. And I always will.”

With this candid reflection, Leah Williamson has finally laid to rest the long-speculated questions surrounding her international choice—choosing pride, passion, and purpose over paperwork.
