Cleveland, OH — In an extraordinary act of generosity, Cleveland Cavaliers star point guard Darius Garland has donated the entirety of his recent $12.9 million performance bonus and sponsorship earnings to fund a transformative homeless shelter initiative in Northeast Ohio. The project aims to create 150 permanent housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds to support families, veterans, and at-risk individuals facing homelessness.

In a heartfelt statement, Garland revealed the deep personal motivation behind his decision: “I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up, and I knew that if I ever had the means, I’d do something about it. This city gave me everything, and now it’s my turn to give back in a real way.”

Garland’s contribution will fully fund the construction of the shelter and housing complex, which will be built on donated land near downtown Cleveland. The facility will include family housing units, mental health and career counseling services, a community kitchen, and a basketball court designed by Garland himself.

The Cavaliers organization praised Garland’s initiative, with General Manager Koby Altman calling it “one of the most inspiring gestures we’ve ever seen from an active player. Darius is not just a leader on the court—he’s setting a powerful example off it.”

According to project leaders, construction is set to begin this fall, with an expected completion by late 2026. The shelter, which will be operated in partnership with several local non-profits, is expected to serve over 5,000 individuals per year.

Cavs fans and the broader NBA community have flooded social media with messages of support, gratitude, and admiration. Teammate Jarrett Allen posted, “This is why I ride with DG. Heart bigger than the arena.”

In a time when many athletes are praised for their performance, Garland has chosen to be recognized for something deeper—compassion and action. His decision doesn’t just change lives—it saves them.

Darius Garland’s game-winning efforts have lit up the hardwood for years, but this move proves that his true legacy might be built far beyond the basketball court. For Cleveland, for the homeless, and for the future—It’s is Done.
