Josh Newton, a TCU product selected in the fifth round of the NFL, feels like a strong pick for the Cincinnati Bengals.
The 6-foot cornerback Newton, who began his collegiate career at Louisiana-Monroe, assisted TCU in their 2022 run to the National Championship Game. He recorded 33 total tackles and one interception in the previous campaign.
Newton was ranked higher by the Bengals than a fifth-round pick, but he lost to Cincinnati last weekend.
Following the selection, Bengals.com’s Geoff Hobson stated, “While the Bengals had a higher grade than the fifth on TCU cornerback Josh Newton and have visions of him staking his claim as possibly the fourth cornerback.” This allows Hill [Dax Hill] to mix things up outside with DJ Turner II and Cam Taylor-Britt.
The plan for Newton to be the team’s fourth corner makes sense because he has stated he likes to play outside, despite what he told reporters after the Bengals selected him in the draft.
Newton remarked, “To be honest, I prefer outside the outside money.” “Outside, if I had to choose.” My goal is to resemble a Swiss Army knife. I’m not attempting to focus on one area. I’d like to have several uses.
