Edmonton, AB โ€“ Just moments ago, the Edmonton Oilers stunned the hockey world by announcing the signing of two goaltenders from the Toronto Maple Leafs, signaling a bold shift in their offseason strategy.

The Oilers have officially signed Matt Tomkins and Joseph Woll, both previously part of the Maple Leafs organization. This aggressive roster move is widely seen as a response to Edmontonโ€™s goaltending inconsistency during the past season and a sign that the team is going all-in for a serious Stanley Cup run.

Tomkins, who split last season between the AHLโ€™s Toronto Marlies and the Maple Leafsโ€™ taxi squad, brings depth and international experience, having represented Team Canada at the 2022 Olympics. Meanwhile, Joseph Woll, considered a rising star in the Leafsโ€™ system, impressed during his NHL stints with solid performances and calm under pressure.

Both goaltenders were acquired on multi-year deals. Tomkins’ contract is reportedly a two-way deal, while Woll is expected to compete directly for the starting job. This move adds immediate competition to the Oilersโ€™ crease and likely signals the end of the road for at least one of Edmontonโ€™s current netminders.

Edmonton GM Ken Holland commented briefly: โ€œWe felt it was time to strengthen our goaltending tandem and build more stability in the net. Both Matt and Joseph bring unique strengths to the table.โ€

The hockey world will be watching closely to see how this gamble plays out for Edmonton. If it succeeds, it could be the final piece the Oilers need to push deep into the playoffs โ€” and perhaps bring the Stanley Cup back to Alberta.
