In a moment of pride and celebration for the motorsports world, NASCAR star Martin Truex Jr. has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for Leadership Excellence and Contributions to Sports Culture during a special ceremony held at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte).

Truex, 44, received the honorary PhD in front of an audience filled with students, faculty, racing professionals, and longtime fans. The event was part of a larger university celebration recognizing individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary impact in their respective fields and used their platform to inspire positive social change.

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dr. Sharon L. Gaber presented the award, praising Truex not just for his accomplishments on the racetrack, but for his off-track integrity, leadership, and commitment to philanthropy.

“Martin Truex Jr. has elevated American motorsports with a rare combination of humility, professionalism, and perseverance. He represents the best of competitive spirit, and his tireless work to give back to communities makes him a role model for future generations,” said Dr. Gaber.

Best known for his 2017 NASCAR Cup Series Championship and over 30 career Cup Series wins, Martin Truex Jr. has long been regarded as one of the sport’s most respected figures. However, the honorary doctorate acknowledges more than just his driving accomplishments.

Through the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation, founded in 2007, he has raised millions for cancer research and supported families impacted by childhood and ovarian cancers. His advocacy and generous funding of hospitals, wellness centers, and cancer treatment programs have touched countless lives across the United States.

In his acceptance speech, Truex delivered heartfelt thanks to the university, his family, his racing team, and his late long-time partner Sherry Pollex, who was a major influence behind his philanthropic mission.

“This honor is deeply humbling. I’ve always said racing is what I do, but helping people is who I want to be. I share this with every young person who’s been told they can’t. With enough heart, you can go further than you ever imagined.”

Truex also addressed the graduating students in attendance, encouraging them to “find purpose beyond success” and to remember that “true leadership is about what you do when the cameras are off.”

Several of his NASCAR peers, including Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, shared congratulatory messages via video, applauding the milestone. NASCAR CEO Steve Phelps also released a statement, saying:

“Martin Truex Jr. exemplifies everything that’s right about sports. His competitive drive is matched only by his character and compassion.”

The ceremony concluded with a standing ovation as Truex donned academic regalia and received the honorary degree. Many attendees noted the emotional atmosphere, a testament to the deep admiration and respect the racing world and wider community have for the veteran driver.

This honorary PhD adds to a long list of accolades for Truex, who has hinted that 2025 may be his final year in full-time racing. Whether or not he returns next season, it is clear that his legacy will endure — not just as a champion on the track, but as a powerful force for good in the world.

Congratulations to Dr. Martin Truex Jr., a true champion in every sense of the word.
