UNC Basketball Unveils Ambitious Plan to Expand and Redesign the Dean Smith Center for the Next Generation

The University of North Carolina has announced an ambitious new vision for the future of its iconic basketball arena — the Dean E. Smith Center. Home to generations of Tar Heel legends and unforgettable moments, the facility is set for a massive expansion and modernization aimed at meeting the needs of the next generation of athletes, fans, and the university community.

The proposed redesign includes state-of-the-art amenities, enhanced seating capacity, and advanced technological upgrades to improve both player performance and fan experience. Plans call for an expanded training complex, upgraded locker rooms, and new recovery and nutrition centers designed to align with elite athletic standards. The renovation will also incorporate sustainable design elements, including energy-efficient lighting and water-saving systems, reflecting UNC’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

One of the most notable features of the project will be an interactive fan concourse celebrating the program’s storied history — from Dean Smith’s legendary coaching era to modern-day triumphs under current leadership. Digital exhibits and virtual experiences will immerse fans in Tar Heel basketball tradition like never before.

UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham emphasized that this transformation honors Dean Smith’s legacy while preparing for the future. “This project represents both respect for our past and an investment in what’s ahead,” Cunningham said. “The Dean Smith Center has always been more than a building — it’s a symbol of excellence, unity, and Tar Heel pride.”

Construction is expected to begin in the coming year, pending final approvals and fundraising milestones. Once completed, the reimagined Dean Smith Center will stand not just as a monument to history, but as a forward-looking home for the continued success of UNC Basketball.
