Myths, Marionettes and Michael Jordan Share a Stage for Nike
Nike’s latest campaign, *“Shattered Backboard,”* brings together mythology, puppetry, and basketball icon Michael Jordan in a uniquely theatrical retelling of a legendary moment. The ad reimagines Jordan’s famous 1985 dunk in Trieste, Italy—where he shattered a backboard—with marionette puppets performing on a miniature stage. Directed by Zackary Canepari and produced by Doubleday & Cartwright, the spot transforms a sports highlight into an operatic myth using handcrafted puppets and cinematic flair.
Set against the backdrop of Italy’s deep marionette tradition, the creative team leaned into limitations to find beauty: the puppets couldn’t dribble or emote, so stylized movements, strategic lighting, and dramatic editing carried the emotion. Puppet designer Eric Wright meticulously crafted the wooden characters, each capturing the essence of 1980s basketball with exaggerated limbs and athletic posture.
Sound played a crucial role. Designer Michalis Anthis layered vintage foley, operatic music, and an Italian crowd ambiance to transport viewers into the nostalgic moment. Narrator Roni Moore delivers the story in rich, theatrical tones, adding depth and reverence. The result is a rhythmically tight, emotionally resonant short film.
By weaving together sport, folklore, and hand-crafted storytelling, Nike elevates Jordan’s already-mythical dunk into something timeless. It’s more than an ad—it’s a cultural tribute. The campaign honors not just Jordan’s legacy, but also Italy’s art traditions, offering a fresh, genre-blending narrative that stands out in the modern marketing land scape.
