North Carolina Tar Heels Donate $47 Million to Support Victims and Rescuers in Flash Flood Tragedy
In an extraordinary act of compassion and leadership, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels have announced a monumental donation of $47 million — funds from their season bonus pool — to support the victims, rescuers, and ongoing search and rescue efforts following the devastating flash floods that struck the southeastern region of the state.
The floods, which overwhelmed multiple counties after days of relentless rain, have now claimed the lives of 68 individuals. Among the confirmed dead are 29 children, a heartbreaking toll that has left communities shattered and families grieving. Entire neighborhoods were swept away, and dozens remain missing as emergency crews work around the clock in dangerous conditions.
The Tar Heels’ donation, the largest ever made by a collegiate athletic program in response to a natural disaster, will be distributed through the North Carolina Emergency Relief Fund. The money will go toward rescue operations, temporary housing, food supplies, medical aid, and support for grieving families.
“This isn’t about basketball. This is about humanity,” said UNC Head Coach Hubert Davis in an emotional press conference. “Our state is hurting. Our people are suffering. And we believe it’s our duty to give back to the communities that have always supported us.”
