Netflix Announces ‘Prince of Darkness: The Ozzy Osbourne and Led Zeppelin Story’ – Biopic Set to Premiere July 5, 2025

July 6, 2025 – Los Angeles, CA – Netflix has officially confirmed the production of Prince of Darkness: The Ozzy Osbourne and Led Zeppelin Story, a groundbreaking biopic set to premiere globally on July 5, 2025. The highly anticipated film promises to explore the electric collision of two of rock’s most iconic legacies—Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne and the legendary band Led Zeppelin.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the music and film industries, as fans around the world expressed overwhelming excitement across social media platforms. Netflix, known for its bold forays into music documentaries and rock biopics, is aiming to deliver an emotionally charged and sonically thrilling journey that chronicles not just Ozzy’s turbulent rise, but his complex and lesser-known intersections with the members of Led Zeppelin.

A Story of Chaos, Genius, and Brotherhood

Set against the backdrop of 1970s Britain and America, Prince of Darkness will delve into the rise of heavy metal and the cultural chaos that fueled it. The film is expected to follow Osbourne’s early days in Birmingham, his explosive tenure with Black Sabbath, and his notorious lifestyle that earned him the moniker “Prince of Darkness.” But what sets this biopic apart is its emphasis on the friendships, rivalries, and mutual admiration that developed between Ozzy and the members of Led Zeppelin—particularly Jimmy Page and John Bonham.

“The story of Ozzy can’t be told without Zeppelin,” said executive producer and music historian Liz Harkins. “There was a raw, unpredictable energy between them—moments of inspiration, mayhem, and mutual respect that shaped an entire genre of music.”

A Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective, No Time to Die), the film stars rising British actor Jack O’Connell as a young Ozzy Osbourne, capturing both the madness and magic that defined his early career. Jimmy Page will be portrayed by Joe Alwyn, while the late John Bonham will be played by George MacKay (1917). Netflix has confirmed that Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s longtime partner and wife, served as a creative consultant on the project, ensuring authenticity and emotional truth.

“Getting Ozzy’s story right was very personal for us,” said Fukunaga. “This isn’t just about drugs and destruction—it’s about a man who kept climbing out of the abyss to find his voice, and how the people around him—especially those Zeppelin boys—played a part in that.”

Never-Before-Told Stories

The film is expected to highlight rarely documented moments, including:

  • A wild night in Los Angeles when Bonham and Ozzy nearly got arrested after trashing a hotel room—only to be rescued by Robert Plant himself.
  • Jimmy Page’s secret late-night jam sessions with Tony Iommi in a Birmingham basement.
  • Ozzy’s emotional reaction to the death of John Bonham in 1980, which he once described as “the end of an era—and a piece of my soul.”

Music plays a central role in the film, and Netflix has secured rights to over 25 tracks from both Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin’s catalogs. The soundtrack, which will be released alongside the film, is rumored to include remastered versions of iconic hits like War Pigs, Whole Lotta Love, Paranoid, and Stairway to Heaven, as well as archival interviews and rare live recordings.

A Legacy Reborn

This project marks another bold move by Netflix into the realm of music storytelling, following the success of titles like The Dirt (Mötley Crüe), Bohemian Rhapsody, and The Defiant Ones. With Prince of Darkness, the streaming giant is betting on a story that blends chaos with craft, and pain with power.

Ozzy Osbourne, now 76 and recently retired from live performance, gave his blessing to the production, even filming a short behind-the-scenes segment that will be released closer to premiere. “I’ve lived ten lifetimes, and somehow I’m still standing,” Ozzy said. “If people are going to tell my story, I want it told with heart—and with plenty of bloody volume.”

The Countdown Begins

Prince of Darkness: The Ozzy Osbourne and Led Zeppelin Story will be available to stream on Netflix starting July 5, 2025, coinciding with the 45th anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s final performance with John Bonham at Knebworth.

For fans of classic rock, heavy metal, and true tales of musical rebellion, this biopic promises to be more than just a movie—it’s a tribute to a golden era of music, and the wild, loud souls who created it.
