Aston Villa have today confirmed the appointment of club legend Gabriel Agbonlahor as the new Under-18 head coach ahead of the 2025/2026 season. The announcement follows a wider restructuring of the club’s youth academy as Villa look to strengthen their development pathway and continue producing top-tier talent.

Agbonlahor, who spent his entire professional career at Villa Park, is one of the club’s most iconic figures in modern history. His transition from playing hero to coaching mentor represents a full-circle moment for the former striker, and signals the club’s commitment to maintaining a strong identity rooted in its proud heritage.

“Villa is in my Blood”

Speaking on his appointment, Agbonlahor expressed immense pride at returning in a developmental role:

“Villa is in my blood. I grew up here, played my entire career here, and now I’m honoured to come back and help shape the next generation. I’ve learned a lot since retiring, and I’m ready to pass that knowledge on to young players coming through the ranks.”

The former forward, who scored 86 goals in 391 appearances for the club between 2005 and 2018, was known for his pace, physicality, and passion for the badge. Since hanging up his boots, Agbonlahor has remained closely connected to football through punditry and coaching education, earning his UEFA B License and gaining experience at various youth levels.

Part of a Bigger Vision

Academy Manager Mark Harrison described Agbonlahor’s appointment as “an exciting and natural fit.”

“Gaby understands the demands of playing for Aston Villa. He’s been through our system, he knows what it takes to break through, and he has a clear passion for helping young players succeed. His energy and experience will be a valuable asset to our academy staff.”

The move is part of a broader strategy to reinforce the club’s academy structure, which has produced stars like Jacob Ramsey and Cameron Archer in recent years. With Villa competing at the highest levels both domestically and in Europe, there’s a renewed emphasis on ensuring that homegrown talent remains a key part of the club’s long-term vision.

A Fresh Start with Familiar Passion

Agbonlahor will begin working with the Under-18 squad this summer, leading pre-season training and implementing a playing philosophy focused on intensity, attacking play, and professionalism—values that defined his own career.

Supporters have reacted positively to the announcement, with many celebrating the return of a fan favourite in a meaningful role. One Villa fan posted on social media:

“Brilliant to see Gabby back where he belongs. He gets the club, the fans, and what it means to wear that shirt. Can’t wait to see what he brings to the next generation.”
