Columbia, SC — In a powerful move that underscores her commitment to community and youth empowerment, South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley has announced a $3.6 million personal investment to convert a historic Columbia residence into a safe and supportive shelter for homeless youth across the state.
Staley, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most celebrated coaches in college basketball, revealed the news in an emotional press conference Tuesday morning, standing alongside local officials, youth advocates, and members of her coaching staff. The shelter, which will be named “The Dawn House,” will serve as both transitional housing and a resource center for vulnerable young people facing homelessness.
“This is bigger than basketball,” Staley said. “I’ve always believed in using whatever platform I have to uplift others. Too many of our young people are falling through the cracks. If I can provide a home, a future, and some hope, then it’s my duty to do that.”
The $3.6 million investment comes entirely from Staley’s personal funds and includes the purchase of the historic home, extensive renovations, and funding for at least the first three years of operations. The shelter is set to open its doors in early 2026 and will feature 15 private rooms, shared living spaces, mental health and academic support services, and a 24/7 on-site staff.
City leaders praised Staley for her generosity and vision. Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann called the initiative “transformative” and “a game-changer for how South Carolina supports its most vulnerable citizens.”
“Coach Staley isn’t just winning championships on the court,” Rickenmann said. “She’s changing lives off it.”
Staley’s decision follows a recent state report highlighting a dramatic rise in youth homelessness, particularly among LGBTQ+ teens, those aging out of foster care, and victims of abuse. Her shelter is designed to address these challenges by creating a safe, inclusive, and forward-looking environment where youth can access stability and develop long-term plans.
Staley credits her mother, Estelle, who passed away in 2017, as the inspiration behind the project. “My mom always told us, ‘When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence.’ That’s what this is. It’s a longer table.”
The news quickly drew national attention, with messages of support flooding social media from fellow coaches, athletes, and fans across the country. University of South Carolina President Michael Amiridis noted that Staley’s commitment to social causes “reflects the best of what it means to be a Gamecock.”
Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with plans to include youth programming partnerships with the University of South Carolina, local nonprofits, and former athletes.
As Dawn Staley continues to lead one of the nation’s top basketball programs, she’s also proving that her greatest victories may be the ones she achieves far from the court.
